Dr. Shondra Marshall began work in the Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion during COVID-19 and spent almost all her tenure at Michigan State University under those unprecedented conditions. In addition, she worked closely with MSU Foundation Professor Dr. Deborah J. Johnson for nearly three years in the Diversity Research Network or DRN. She is a two-time alumna with both undergraduate and graduate degrees from MSU.

During this time, Marshall worked in inaugural capacities — for two years as DRN's first program coordinator and then as DRN's first-ever assistant director. She became integral to DRN's work and forged new systems and relations for the network through her simultaneous presidency in the Black Alumni Association. DRN is grateful for that collaborative work and the ongoing work.

In her director role, Marshall quickly became a strong presence for the DRN membership. Furthermore, many of DRN's faculty relied on her professional support, especially during COVID in-person and online events continuing after restrictions were lifted.

"I remember that, during our first return to an away retreat, I was called away, and Shondra stepped in, took the reins and did a fabulous/flawless job," said DRN Director Johnson. "We also were able to have her address systems within DRN. Additionally, she developed an onboarding procedure for new students that we continue to employ."

Marshall was "more than the DRN," she gave campus talks and supported the inaugural Juneteenth celebrations; her contacts and advice were critical to its success. Moreover, she was a clear and strong presence supporting a significant campuswide event.

Marshall is currently working with Michigan Public Health Institutes as a senior project coordinator. We wish her well in her new role and thank her for her indelible imprint on DRN and Michigan State.
