Cristina Rivera Garza: Confronting Gender Violence Through Literature
Mon, March 9, 2026 at Union Ballroom
Join us for an evening with Pulitzer Prize–winning author Cristina Rivera Garza, who will speak about her celebrated book Liliana’s Invincible Summer. Blending journalism, memoir, and poetic prose, Rivera Garza reconstructs the life of her younger sister, Liliana, a bold, curious, and hopeful young woman pursuing her independence and passions in a world that often sought to limit her. Through the act of writing, Rivera Garza aims to recover Liliana’s voice, imagine the life and contributions she might have made, and ensure that her memory continues to live and inspire.
Her reading and reflections invite us to consider the possibilities of storytelling as a space for remembrance, imagination, and collective care.
After a reading from her book, Rivera Garza will be joined by a panel of faculty for a conversation, followed by an audience Q&A. A reception will conclude the evening, offering an opportunity to continue the dialogue and meet the author.
