Updated DEI Foundations is released

March 5, 2024 - Jabbar R. Bennett, Ph.D.

To Students, Staff and Faculty:

Michigan State University’s DEI Foundations, mandated in 2020, is an online introductory education program about diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, for the Spartan community. Following extensive review and community feedback, the Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, or IDI, developed a new, fully tailored e-learning experience to reflect MSU’s diverse communities and our needs.

Today, I am excited to announce the launch of the redesigned DEI Foundations program. The course provides you with fundamental DEI concepts, skills and practices; an understanding of MSU's institutional values, key initiatives, DEI-related policies and resources; awareness of underrepresented members of the MSU community and their experiences; and actions you can take to support a more diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.

I want to thank and recognize DEI Learning Development Specialist Dr. Mina Shin and the Education and Development team in the IDI office, who facilitated cross-campus input sessions to include diverse voices and perspectives. Shin engaged dozens of groups, units and over 400 stakeholders in envisioning, creating and piloting the current version.

DEI Foundations is an essential first step intended to heighten awareness and ensure all Spartans are welcome, respected and included in our institution. This shared learning experience will provide an opportunity to deepen our collective understanding and appreciation for the vibrant, diverse and inclusive Spartan community.

The program is required for new students, staff and faculty who have yet to complete it this semester. An incremental rollout will continue through the end of the year.
