Following a three-year hiatus, the DRN Faculty Study Break returned to provide a moment of respite and connection for diverse faculty at MSU.

In April, DRN created a space in the beautiful Eli and Blythe Broad Art Museum for faculty to break from what has been an unusual semester. For several hours, faculty enjoyed food, soothing music and conversations on research.

“Renewal is an essential part of productivity and feeling valued in the institution,” said DRN Director Deborah J. Johnson. “It was wonderful to be in each other’s company following the lifting of pandemic restrictions.”

DRN provided jazz music performed by College of Music students. Attendee Emilie Smith, Distinguished Senior Scholar in Social Science and Director of the Youth Equity Project, was inspired and spontaneously treated the group to her rendition of “God Bless the Child That’s Got His Own.”

Faculty Research Associate Raul Rodriguez and Associate Professors Ning Hsieh and Asia Dowtin among others were able to connect around research endeavors and engage in mutual support exchange.

“The study break provided a nurturing environment that made faculty feel valued by MSU,” said Associate Professor Linda Halgunseth in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies who attended the event.
